Watershed Management for Endangered Aquatic and Riparian Species: Facts and Fallacies
نویسنده
چکیده
River basin management is becoming increasingly complex in the United States since watershed managers are required to take into consideration the threatened and endangered (T&E) species that inhabit aquatic and riparian ecosystems. Unfortunately, too many fallacies and political agendas have crept into the picture. Suppositions and hypotheses fly everywhere in the political-legal environment under the guise of making "conservative" decisions for preservation of T&E species, but few are rigorously tested. Some of the fallacies are: single species management works, extrinsic factors cause the problems, simple solutions are available, fluvial systems are stable, we understand the natural range of variability, and ecosystems can be restored, etc. Watershed management decisions in the 21st century related to T&E species must be founded on the basis of solid science.

Stream and Riparian Ecology
Water is a valuable resource for humans (direct consumption, power, irrigation, industry) and provides essential habitat for many organisms, including highly valued fish species such as salmonids. Aquatic habitat is influenced by processes active not only in the near-stream (riparian) zone (e.g., provision of shade) but also over the entire watershed (e.g., hillslope hydrologic processes that c...

Medicinal species of mountain’s kelavs, scientifically named (kelussia odoratissmia Mozaffar.) is an endemic species in Iran. Kelussia odoratissima is a perennial species and belongs to the umbelliferae. From the ancient times, the local and nomad societies had believed that the species traditionally have anti-ache, anti-inflation and anti-cough effects. Seed and root of this species are boiled...

متن کاملBasic principles and ecological consequences of changing water regimes: riparian plant communities.
Recent research has emphasized the importance of riparian ecosystems as centers of biodiversity and links between terrestrial and aquatic systems. Riparian ecosystems also belong among the environments that are most disturbed by humans and are in need of restoration to maintain biodiversity and ecological integrity. To facilitate the completion of this task, researchers have an important functi...
متن کاملRapid assessment of the riparian zone habitat of river
Some riparian areas of the country are in danger of deterioration due to uncontrolled exploitation coupled with loose implementation of environmental protection policies and regulations. Muleta River, a major watershed in Bukidnon, Philippines, was assessed to determine the present condition of its riparian habitat. Abiotic and biotic conditions of the river were assessed. Other factors includi...
